Airport
Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is located approximately 17 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh and approximately 19 miles west of the University of Pittsburgh’s Oakland campus.
Airport Transportation
Access to ground transportation is located opposite the baggage claim area on the lower level of the Landside Terminal.
The Travelers Aid desk, located on the baggage claim level of the Landside Terminal, offers general travel assistance and information in emergency situations (412-472 3599).
Shuttle
Shuttle service is available to downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland. The ticket desk is located on the same level as the baggage claim area near the rental car counters. While no reservation is required, it is recommended that travelers contact the company in advance..
Express Shuttle (412-322-9113) provides service to hotels in downtown Pittsburgh, Oakland, and Shadyside. Shuttles leave the airport every half hour Sunday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the desk. Fares to downtown hotels are $20 one way or $35 roundtrip; fares to Oakland hotels are $25 one way or $43 roundtrip; fares to Shadyside hotels are $28 one way and $49 roundtrip.
Taxi
Taxi service is provided by Yellow Cab (412-321-8100) and Checker Cab (412-664-5600). One-way fares are approximately $40 to downtown Pittsburgh and $45 to Oakland.
Bus
Port Authority Transit (412-442-2000, www.ridegold.com) operates the 28X Airport Flyer, which runs each 20 to 30 minutes from the ground transportation area of the airport. The driver does not carry change and does not assist with luggage.
To Downtown Pittsburgh
The bus stops in downtown Pittsburgh at the intersection of Liberty Avenue and Wood Street. The fare is $2.25 (exact change required).
To Oakland
The bus stops in Oakland at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard, directly opposite the Cathedral of Learning on the University of Pittsburgh campus. The fare is $2.60 (exact change required).
Driving Directions
To Downtown Pittsburgh
After exiting the airport, follow U.S. 60 south to Interstate 279 North. Continue on I-279 North through the Fort Pitt Tunnels into the downtown area of Pittsburgh.
To Oakland
After exiting the airport, follow U.S. 60 south to I-279 North. Continue on I-279 North through the Fort Pitt Tunnels and across the bridge to the I-376 Monroeville exit (first exit off the bridge). Follow I-376 to the Forbes Avenue-Oakland exit. Forbes Avenue leads directly into the University of Pittsburgh’s Oakland campus.
Parking on the Oakland Campus
Public parking on campus is generally limited. A map of visitor parking facilities on campus is available. Daily rates for different parking garages vary. The Soldiers and Sailors Parking Garage, at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard (entrance on Bigelow Boulevard), is the closest to the symposium location (about two blocks).
Public Transportation
The Port Authority of Allegheny County offers extensive bus service to downtown Pittsburgh, its surrounding neighborhoods, and tourist destinations. The one-way fare between downtown and Oakland is $2. For information and schedules: www.ridegold.com or 412-442-2000.
